This design is
based on the Superman of the 1940's. You can see it in the old Max &
Dave Fleischer animated shorts. There are several dvd sets out there
with these classic cartoons on them. Back when Superman was wearing this
outfit at first he had to leap tall buildings only. He didn't even fly
at first.
